Macri Says PRO Won't Let Populism Return to Argentina

The PRO party held a national meeting to devise a strategy for the 2027 elections. Former President Mauricio Macri stated that his party disagrees with Milei's government but will not allow populism to return. He emphasized that most Argentines voted for Milei to reject populism. The event was attended by prominent political figures, including governors and the mayor of Buenos Aires.

The PRO party held its national plenary to strengthen its party structure and design its electoral strategy for the 2027 presidential elections, an event marking Macri's return to party activities. In his closing speech, former President Mauricio Macri stated that PRO does not agree with everything in President Javier Milei's government but will not give 'populism' an excuse to 'return.' He emphasized that he wants families not only to think about improving but to know they can stop making things worse. Macri also noted that most Argentines voted for Milei in 2023 to 'get rid of populism,' and his party supported this decision. The meeting gathered about 500 activists, deputies, senators, and provincial legislators. It was attended by Governors Ignacio Torres (Chubut) and Rogelio Frigerio (Entre Ríos), Mayor of Vicente López Soledad Martínez, and Head of Government of Buenos Aires City Jorge Macri. Jorge Macri, in turn, stated that the country is at a 'pivotal moment' and that his party will work for Argentina to 'move forward' and 'not go back.' He called on them to 'go out onto the streets' to 'infect' people and 'enthuse' them. Cristian Ritondo, president of the PRO bloc in the Chamber of Deputies, stated that 'no reform' pushed by the government 'could have been possible without PRO's help.' Former Governor of Buenos Aires Province María Eugenia Vidal also spoke, asserting that they will 'be protagonists again' in 2027. She also noted that PRO is 'relevant' despite its members being 'a little older.'
